Oyster Bay Wines
Oyster Bay takes its name from the local 'Oyster Bay' on the tip of
New Zealand's majestic South Island. Oyster Bay's reputation has been
built from vines grown in Marlborough's central Wairau Valley now recognised
as one of the great wine growing regions of the world. With its cool,
sunny, maritime climate and its shallow, stony soils etched across great
alluvial plains by ancient glaciers, Marlborough is a fantastic area
to grow vines, producing some of the world's most remarkable wines.

Internationally recognised for producing elegant wines with glorious
fruit flavours, Oyster Bay is also a winemaker with great viticultural
vision. It was Oyster Bay that had the foresight, over two decades ago,
to recognise the enormous wine-growing potential that lay beneath the
stony, alluvial soils of a marginal sheep farming district in New Zealand's
Hawke's Bay. Today that region is producing New Zealand's finest merlots.
Vineyards
Set in the alluvial heart of Marlborough, one of the world's most recognised
wine-growing regions and a place as beautiful as it is abundant, you
will find the vineyards that grew the reputation of Oyster Bay. Here,
on the shallow stony soils of the tranquil Wairau Plains, where long,
slow summers and cool autumn nights give birth to grapes of intense
and fruity flavours, Oyster Bay began, from the very outset, to produce
wines of international stature.
Marlborough provides Oyster Bay with the perfect mix of sun and soil
to produce wines of great character - distinctive, assertive, cool-climate
chardonnays, sauvignon blancs and pinot noirs that define the very essence
- and exclusivity - of New Zealand viticulture.
If Marlborough was the birthplace of Oyster Bay, then Hawke's Bay,
on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, is its second home.
Here on silty, sun-drenched alluvial plains carved by ancient glaciers,
Oyster Bay grows some of New Zealand's most elegant and exciting, cool-climate
Merlots.
Oyster Bay State Highway 63 Vineyard, Marlborough
With 258 hectares planted, this vineyard on the central Wairau Plains,
about 15 minutes drive from Blenheim, is the largest Oyster Bay vineyard
and is also one of the largest individual vineyards in New Zealand.
It is a unique site with three distinct terraces, each with slightly
different soils. The grape types that can be found here are sauvignon
blanc 59%, chardonnay 33% and pinot noir 8%.
Oyster Bay Dashwood Vineyard, Marlborough
This is Oyster Bay's new vineyard in Marlborough's Awatere Valley,
about 20 mins over the hill from the Wairau Valley. It is a terraced
vineyard, high up above the Awatere river with spectacular scenery all
around. 167 hectares are planted, featuring an almost even split of
the classic Marlborough varieties – sauvignon blanc, chardonnay
and pinot noir.
Oyster Bay Wairau River Vineyard, Marlborough
In 2003, the vineyard was established with the planting of 132 hectares
of sauvignon blanc. This picturesque site is only 400m from the Wairau
River and it's also very close to the Oyster Bay State Highway 63 vineyard.
A large proportion of the nearby river flows underground.
Oyster Bay Fault Lake Vineyard, Marlborough
This prime, central Wairau vineyard is planted with 171 hectares of
vines – nearly half in sauvignon blanc and the balance in pinot
noir and chardonnay. An interesting feature is the preservation and
development of approximately 9 hectares of wetland around Fault Lake
itself where there is a thriving population of ducks, swans, water fowl
and frogs.
Oyster Bay Crownthorpe Vineyard, Hawke's Bay
The Crownthorpe estate is located west of the Hertaunga plains. At
285 hectares, this vineyard is the single largest vineyard planted in
Merlot in the Hawke's Bay region. This terraced vineyard is situated
on the spectacular cliff facing on the Ngarouro River and bounded to
the south by the Kikowhiro Steam. Crownthorp is distinguished for its
free draining alluvial loams overlaying stony sub-soils.
